What is a Automatic?
An automatic motorbike shifts gears automatically. The only thing you have to do is control the bike's speed and break. Both breaks are located by the steering wheel.
Difficulty: very easy, perfect for beginners and casuals
What is a Semi-Automatic?
Semi-automatics have different gears which you have to change depending on your speed. When driving you need to control the speed, breaks, and shift gears. The gears are changed by a switch at the left foot. The front break is located by your right hand while the back break is by your right foot.
Difficulty: medium, if you are familiar with shifting gears
What is a Manual?
Like semi-automatics, manuals also require you to shift gears. Manuals, however, need you to use the clutch to do so (like in a manual car). The gears are changed by a switch by your left foot and by pulling and releasing the clutch with your left hand. The front break is located by your right hand and the back break is be your right foot.
Difficulty: hard, for experienced drivers
Which should I
Automatic motorbikes are made for the city. City driving can become really stressful due to all of the other vehicles on the road vying for space. Since you don’t have to worry about anything other than your speed and the breaks, automatic bikes are the easiest to drive. If you plan on staying mostly in the city, or if you are a beginner driver, we recommend these bikes.
Semi-Automatic bikes are also made for city use, and they are often used by locals. For this type of bike, you not only control your speed and the breaks, but you also need to change gears (without a clutch). Because of this, beginners could find driving with a semi-automatic bike, especially in a big city like Saigon, to be stressful and overwhelming. We recommend these bikes for drivers with a little bit experience at driving bikes. If driving an automatic motorbike is too boring for you, it might be more fun to try out a semi-automatic bike instead.
Manual bikes are often used by locals and backpackers alike to travel the countryside. These bikes are not particularly suited for city use. For these bikes, you can control your speed and the breaks, but you also have to change gears using a clutch. Thus we recommend these bikes for experienced drivers. If driving a semi-automatic bike is too boring or just doesn’t fit your driving style, you are welcome to try a manual one. Driving manual bikes is the most fun once you’re used to using the gear and the clutch.
